He has worked in various media - including kinetic sculpture, film, performance, and the making of environments - but the constant in his work has been drawing, either as a working tool, as a means of recording and observing, or as an end in itself. For Martin, drawing is a system of signs analogous to those of language, and also an intellectual process of enquiry, analysis and proposition. \r\n\r\nHis gift of drawings spans his career from the time he was a student drawing from the plaster casts in the Cast Courts at the V&A, represented by this pen and ink wash drawing of a Gothic Arch from the Rosslyn Chapel, until the 1990s. For other drawings by Martin in the V&A collection see E.315-321-2006.","physicalDescription":"Small portrait format pen, ink and wash of a cast of a gothic archway","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Martin, Barry","id":"A18142"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper (fiber product)","id":"AAT14109"},{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"}],"techniques":[{"text":"wash technique","id":"AAT182748"},{"text":"drawing (image-making)","id":"AAT54196"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pen and ink and wash on paper","categories":[{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Scotland","id":"THES262877"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2007BP7041","2023NP6278"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLH","id":"THES49654"},"free":"","case":"WD","shelf":"83","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawing","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Victoria and Albert Museum","id":"x32782"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1961","earliest":"1961-01-01","latest":"1961-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the artist","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"23.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"16.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"BM 1960","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"signature and date; in pencil.
