He is best known for his designs for prints and printed books, although later in life he focussed increasingly on paintings. \r\n\r\nIn the 1790s and early 1800s, Hokusai was popular with poetry clubs as an illustrator of the printed albums and single-sheet prints they produced to showcase their finest poems. This book is the first of three volumes depicting scenes on the banks of the Sumida River in Edo (now Tokyo), with <i>kyôka</i> poems (literally 'crazy verse'). On this page, the artist illustrates the hustle and bustle of city life in front of river-side tea houses and restaurants.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Katsushika Hokusai","id":"A6847"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper (fiber product)","id":"AAT14109"}],"techniques":[{"text":"woodblock print","id":"x38448"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Printed in colour, from wood blocks, on paper","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Books","id":"THES48986"}],"styles":[{"text":"Edo (Japanese period)","id":"AAT106643"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2006BK6314","2006BK6312","2006BK6309"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"006","id":"THES394196"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Book 绘本隅田川两岸一览上","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Japan","id":"x29399"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1803","earliest":"1798-01-01","latest":"1807-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"E.2678-1925","id":"O128739"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"E.2679-1925","id":"O128740"},"association":"Set"}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"restaurants","id":"AAT5182"},{"text":"rivers","id":"AAT8707"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.2677-1925"],"accessionNumberNum":"2677","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":1925,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":["2019LN5093","2019LT4535","2019LW2952"],"recordModificationDate":"2026-03-20","recordCreationDate":"2006-10-24","availableToBook":true}}
