Kyôka developed in Japan in the Edo period (1615-1868). Poetry circles sprang up for competition and recreation and often privately published illustrated anthologies of their finest work.\r\n\r\nSixty poems in celebration of the coming of spring by sixty poets are spread over five double pages in this anthology. Utamaro supplied five illustrations of New Year scenes. This illustration is the fourth, and depicts New Year street performers (<i>dai-kagura</i>).","physicalDescription":"Japanese concertina binding - each bifolia adhered to next to form concertina","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Kitagawa Utamaro","id":"A6881"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Printed in colour, from wood blocks, on paper","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Books","id":"THES48986"}],"styles":[{"text":"Edo (Japanese period)","id":"AAT106643"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2006BK6320"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES393755"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Book","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Japan","id":"x29399"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1786","earliest":"1786-01-01","latest":"1786-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"258","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"02/06/2015","earliest":"2015-06-02","latest":"2015-06-02"},"part":"","note":"Measured in book conservation in measuring box."},{"dimension":"Width","value":"193","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"02/06/2015","earliest":"2015-06-02","latest":"2015-06-02"},"part":"","note":"Measured in book conservation in measuring box."},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"7","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"02/06/2015","earliest":"2015-06-02","latest":"2015-06-02"},"part":"","note":"Measured in book conservation in measuring box."}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Pap, Japan, prints","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[{"text":"Street scenes","id":"x35546"}],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.2957-1925"],"accessionNumberNum":"2957","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":1925,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":["2019LN4362","2019LT4719","2019LT8621","2019LW4513"],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-09","recordCreationDate":"2006-10-23","availableToBook":true}}
