Kyôka developed in Japan in the Edo period (1615-1868). Poetry circles sprang up for competition and recreation and often privately published illustrated anthologies and single-sheet prints of their finest work.\r\n\r\nThe title of the anthology can also mean 'Crazy Gazing at the Moon'. It contains seventy-two verses on the theme of the moon, with five illustrations by Utamaro, all featuring the moon.
