Together with the Munich group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), Die Brücke was the backbone of the German Expressionist movement. These artists revived the woodcut as a medium for printmaking, exploiting the physical qualities of the wood - such its resistance to the cutting tool and the pattern of the grain - to produce images characterised by energy, immediacy and directness.","physicalDescription":"Woodcut print, black ink on paper, showing a seated female nude.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Schmidt-Rottluff, Karl","id":"A6717"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"}],"techniques":[{"text":"wood-cutting","id":"AAT53296"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Woodcut on paper","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Woodcuts","id":"THES267451"}],"styles":[{"text":"Expressionist","id":"AAT21502"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006BK8312","2011EV0556"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"MP","shelf":"84","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Germany","id":"x28873"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1912","earliest":"1912-01-01","latest":"1912-12-31"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Dr Rosa Schapire","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"52","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"42.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"31","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"image","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"24","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"image","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"standard royal frame size","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'S.Rottluff 1912 An Mombert'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"To Mombert","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"signed, dated and inscribed in pencil.
