His work spans ballet, drama, film, musical, opera and revue. Messel’s traditional style of theatre design became unfashionable from the mid 1950s onwards, and he increasingly concentrated on painting, interior and textile design, including designing luxury homes in the Caribbean.\r\n\r\nMessel essembled a reference collection of costumes and headdresses of diverse ethnic origin. This headdress made from clusters of beads, sequins and ribbons is probably from this collection, and would have been used to inspire the construction and design of his headdresses for theatre commissions.","physicalDescription":"A headdress owned by Oliver Messel as part of his reference collection. Wire attached to the solid structure on which beads and sequins in silver, gold, green, red and blue are attached in clusters. Some rhinestones.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wire","id":"AAT11063"},{"text":"beads","id":"x32809"},{"text":"rhinestone","id":"AAT10806"},{"text":"sequins","id":"x30374"},{"text":"metal","id":"AAT10900"},{"text":"ribbon","id":"AAT14668"},{"text":"fabric","id":"AAT162391"}],"techniques":[{"text":"millinery","id":"x39135"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Wire, beads, sequins, metal, ribbon, fabric, rhinestone","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Hats & headwear","id":"THES48943"},{"text":"Theatre costume","id":"THES268477"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2007BN4122"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES343690"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Theatre costume","id":""}],[{"text":"headdress","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Acquired with the support of the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Art Fund and the Friends of the V&A","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"15","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"19","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Circumference","value":"58.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Lord Snowdon, Oliver Messel's nephew, inherited Messel's theatre designs and other designs and artefacts.
