However they did not treat this greatest of English cultural icons with undue reverence: not only is his name rearranged, but the poems are interspersed with, and interrupted by, overprinting and collage, sometimes to the point of semi-illegibility. Brightly-coloured geometric shapes, and further texts, in German, are taken from modern books on various aspects of mortality – a strong theme in Shakespeare's sonnet sequence. \n\nThe slim volume is bound in delicate paper boards covered with tissue. Traditionalist craft values  combine with a modernist poetic sensibility of fracture, fragmentation and allusion. The bold and busy visual style is characteristic of late 20th-century graphic design.","physicalDescription":"Artist's book featuring Sonnets 18, 24, 23 & 66 by William Shakespeare (in English).\r\nGerman commentary chiefly about death derived from a number of different sources. \r\nThe page layout and typography are experimental, and are overlaid with abstract (silk-screen print?) designs. \r\n\r\nColour illustrations.\r\n\r\nPaper boards covered with tissue-paper.\n\n32 pages.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Stoltz, Ulrike","id":"AUTH330608"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Unica T","id":"AUTH330609"},"association":{"text":"publisher","id":"x32600"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"'Set & printed at the European Arts' Tent during Art in Action 87 at Waterperry House, Oxford, England, 16-19th July '87 on a Hopkinson 30 x 46 press (\"Kniehebelpresse\") ...' - colophon","categories":[{"text":"Artists' Books","id":"THES261563"},{"text":"National Art Library","id":"THES271541"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"NAL","id":"THES48605"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"NAL","id":"THES251738"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"artist's book","id":"AAT123016"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Offenbach","id":"x40963"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1988","earliest":"1988-01-01","latest":"1988-12-31"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"23","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Artist's book, 'Shake a speer: Assoziationen zu vier Sonetten von William Shakespeare', by Ulrike Stoltz, Unica T, Offenbach-am-Main, 1988","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["38041989023072"],"accessionNumberNum":"38041989023072","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":null,"otherNumbers":[{"type":{"text":"NAL Pressmark","id":"THES56809"},"number":"X890026"}],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-09","recordCreationDate":"2014-02-13","availableToBook":false}}
