It would have served, framed, for personal devotion. \r\n\r\nThe design of the panel was formed by pressing damp, pliable leather into a mould, and enhancing the design with some embossing from the reverse of the panel. Once the design had been worked in relief, it was covered with silver leaf (and possibly coloured glazes), giving a beautiful and subtle modelling to low relief. As the technique lends itself to reproduction, it is not surprising that 16 other virtually identical panels have been traced.","physicalDescription":"Embossed gilt leather panel, with a representation of the crucification with Mary, St. John and Mary Magdalene. In the clouds the symbols of the four evangelists are depicted: left the bull and the angel, right: the lion and the eagle. The panel is mounted on its original wooden panel, with a filling of papier-mache.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"De Rijsende Son factory","id":"A18418"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":"attributed to"}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"leather","id":"AAT11845"}],"techniques":[{"text":"embossing","id":"AAT53826"},{"text":"gilding","id":"AAT53789"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Embossed and gilded leather","categories":[{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"},{"text":"Interiors","id":"THES48933"},{"text":"Wall coverings","id":"THES48878"},{"text":"Leather","id":"THES49030"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2010ED2565"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"025","id":"THES301798"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Embossed gilt leather panel","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Amsterdam","id":"x28722"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1650-1658","earliest":"1650-01-01","latest":"1658-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"W.8-1980","id":"O119912"},"association":"Duplicate"}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"41.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"without frame","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"30","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Original measurements: 15 3/4 in. x 11 3/4 in.","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Identical panels in V&A, museum number W.8-1980; Deutsches Ledermuseum, Offenbach am Main, inventory number 2524; coll Colomer-Munmany, Vic (Sp.), inventory number C812; Schloss Köpenick, Berlin, inventory number K 9239b; Musée Episcopal, Vic (Sp.), inventory number 6045; Musée National de la Renaissance, Ecouen, inventory number A15062; Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, inventory number BK 1994-1; Museum of Leathercraft, Northampton, inventory number unknown; Church in Somerset.
