It was cast by Orenzio Lelli in about 1883. \n\nThe cast is displayed in one of the two magnificent Cast Courts at the V&A. Since they were first opened in 1873, these galleries have displayed reproductions of some of the most significant monuments of medieval and Renaissance Europe. In these galleries one can view plaster casts of sculptures from Renaissance Italy, notably some of the masterpieces produced by Donatello, Luca della Robbia and Michelangelo. \r\nThe sculptures are faithful copies of the originals. They were made in the 19th century, when the vogue for replicated works of art was at its height. Museum visitors at that time generally had little opportunity to travel abroad, and illustrated art books were costly. These superb casts could afford people a rare glimpse of the original sculptures, even if they could not visit Florence or Rome. Artists and designers then and now could likewise sketch and learn from them. The painted surfaces of these reproductions often mirror the original stone or bronze, and the casts seem convincingly monumental. But they are made of plaster, a relatively fragile material.\r\n","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"della Robbia, Luca","id":"A2359"},"association":{"text":"sculptor","id":"AAT25181"},"note":"original"},{"name":{"text":"Lelli, Oronzio","id":"A18022"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":"of plaster cast"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"plaster","id":"AAT14922"}],"techniques":[{"text":"cast","id":"AAT53104"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Plaster cast painted ","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"},{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2007BM5836","2007BM5832","2017JY0763"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"46B","id":"THES49798"},"free":"","case":"FS","shelf":"C","box":""},{"current":{"text":"46B","id":"THES49798"},"free":"","case":"FS","shelf":"C","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Group","id":"AAT133146"}],[{"text":"Plaster Cast","id":""}],[{"text":"Statuette","id":"x45409"}],[{"text":"Group visitation orig glazed t/c luca della robbia","id":""}],[{"text":"St Anne","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Florence","id":"x28848"},"association":{"text":"sculpted","id":"x30774"},"note":"original"},{"place":{"text":"Florence","id":"x28848"},"association":{"text":"cast","id":"x32615"},"note":"plaster cast"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1445","earliest":"1440-01-01","latest":"1449-12-31"},"association":{"text":"sculpted","id":"x30774"},"note":"original"},{"date":{"text":"ca. 1883","earliest":"1878-01-01","latest":"1887-12-31"},"association":{"text":"cast","id":"x32615"},"note":"plaster cast"}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"119.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"151.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased from Oronzio Lelli in 1883 for £32.","historicalContext":"The group is thought to have existed before 1445, when a sum was donated to the sodality of the Visitation for an oil lamp to be burnt before the figure of \"the Virgin of the Visitation\".
