He studied under Carolus-Duran and was his assistant until 1878. Sargent's reputation as a portraitist reached its height in the 1890s, and he painted many of the distinguished personalities of his day, including the actress Dame Ellen Terry, Robert Louis Stevenson and Henry James.\n\nRostand wrote his 1900 tragedy <i>L'Aiglon</i> for Sarah Bernhardt, who played the 'trouser role' of the young Napoleon II, nicknamed L'Aiglon (the young eagle).
