Dated 9 September 1889.\n\nBetween 1878 and 1905 the Lyceum Theatre was managed by the actor Sir Henry Irving (1837-1905). The first actor to be knighted, Irving established a leading role for both himself and his theatre during the late 19th century. Under his management the Lyceum became famous for the quality and scale of its spectacular productions. \n\nThe actor, theatre designer and director Edward Gordon Craig was the son of Irving's leading lady, Ellen Terry (1847-1928), who performed alongside Irving for over twenty years.","physicalDescription":"Pen and ink sketch of the interior of the Lyceum Theatre, London.
