She wrote the majority of the Original Peter Rabbit Books between 1901 and 1913. The Tale of Peter Rabbit (Frederick Warne, 1902) is her most famous and best-loved tale. \r\n\r\nBefore her marriage in 1913, Beatrix Potter would accompany her family to Scotland or to the Lake District for the summer months. She recorded her impressions of the places and people she visited in a journal written in code; her sketches of houses and gardens inspired some of the backgrounds in her book illustrations. \r\n\r\nThe staircase in this drawing has been thought to be that of St. Mary's Tower, Little Dunkeld, near Birnam, Perthshire. St. Mary's Tower was the Scottish seat of Henry J. B. Manners and its staircase is depicted in Sir John Everett Millais's 'The Grey Lady'. However, it is more likely that the staircase is in a church near Tenby; Beatrix Potter visited here in 1882.","physicalDescription":"Sepia wash and pencil drawing of a spiral staircase, with stairs ascending on the left and descending on the right.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Beatrix Potter","id":"A18000"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"sepia","id":"AAT15025"},{"text":"pencil","id":"x30347"},{"text":"card","id":"x30344"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing","id":"x32498"},{"text":"wash","id":"AAT182748"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Sepia wash and pencil on card","categories":[{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Architecture","id":"THES48993"},{"text":"Interiors","id":"THES48933"},{"text":"Woman Artist","id":"THES387590"},{"text":"Tourism & Travel","id":"THES250702"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2020ML3860","2020ML3861"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"009","id":"THES317971"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawing","id":"x32498"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Wray Castle","id":"THES252621"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":"previously identified in the catalogue as 'St Mary's Tower' and 'Tenby, possibly' but confirmed as being from Wray Castle during a visit in 2021."}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1882","earliest":"1882-01-01","latest":"1882-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"The Potters stayed at Wray Castle in 1882"}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Linder Bequest [plus object number; written on labels on the same line as the object number]","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"253","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"177","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Inscription in pencil on verso: 1882","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Drawn by Beatrix Potter.
