It shows three forms of sedan chair carried by people of colour. Images such as this increased in popularity in Europe through the publication of travel narratives by Spanish, French, English, Portuguese, Italian and Dutch explorers and colonists from the 16th century onwards. Many such travelogues were accompanied by illustrations, often based on first hand observations. Extensive copying and circulation of similar illustrations occured during the 17th and 18th centuries in line with the introduction of sedan chairs as a mode of transport in some cities in Britain, particularly London, Edinburgh and Bath.","physicalDescription":"Print depicting three separate scenes with three different types of sedan chair carried by people of colour wearing loincloths.
