He was effectively dismissed on 13th December 1916 following the French losses sustained during the German offensive at Verdun, for which he was blamed. However, he was made a Marshal of France that day and was very popular with the French public. This medal is typical of French medals produced by La Monnaie (Paris Mint) to commemorate the battles, victories, heroes and leaders of the First World War. Intensely patriotic, their decorative idealised style is still rooted in the nineteenth century and conveys little of the harsh reality of trench warfare.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Legastelois, Jules-Prosper","id":"A17967"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bronze","id":"AAT10957"}],"techniques":[{"text":"struck","id":"x32575"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Struck bronze","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"},{"text":"Portraits","id":"THES48906"},{"text":"Coins & Medals","id":"THES48974"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2006AC4850","2006AC4848"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"029","id":"THES395371"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Medal","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1915","earliest":"1915-01-01","latest":"1915-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Jack E.
