Lacquer and hemp cloth are applied to a cypress wood base.\n\n4. The surface is scraped flat with a blade.\n\n5-7. Fine clay mixed with lacquer is applied as a filler and polished with a whetstone. \n\n8-22. A smooth ground is built up by applying six progressively fine layers of lacquer mixed with clay. Each layer is polished with a whetstone.\n\n23-28. Three coats of black lacquer are applied, each one polished with charcoal.\n\n29.
