The pattern of large flowers and leaves dates from about 1742. Silks pre-dating the construction of a particular dress, often by a decade or more, are quite common in 18th-century dress. Once woven, bolts of silk might be available for sale for many years, and it was not unusual for purchasers to store lengths of silk before making them up or giving them away as a gift. The high cost of woven silks meant that their value did not decrease, even as fashions changed. Characteristic of the 1760s are the double sleeve ruffles edged with a matching silk fringe.","physicalDescription":"A woman's sack of blue silk damask, trimmed with blue fringe","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silk damask","id":"x37979"},{"text":"linen","id":"x29412"},{"text":"fringe","id":"AAT227830"},{"text":"braid","id":"AAT232186"}],"techniques":[{"text":"hand weaving","id":"AAT53643"},{"text":"hand sewing","id":"AAT257459"},{"text":"dress making","id":"AAT53650"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silk and linen, hand woven and hand sewn","categories":[{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Clothing","id":"THES48975"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Womenswear","id":"THES49044"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006BF0547","2012FF4616"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"SR004","id":"THES392741"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"SR004","id":"THES392741"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Sack","id":"AAT224538"}],[{"text":"Petticoat","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Spitalfields","id":"x29420"},"association":{"text":"weaving","id":"AAT53642"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1760-1769","earliest":"1760-01-01","latest":"1769-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"ca. 1742","earliest":"1737-01-01","latest":"1746-12-31"},"association":{"text":"hand woven","id":"AAT53643"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the Surrey County Federation of Women's Institutes","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Sack back gown, British, 1760-1770, made with 1740s blue silk damask","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Avril Hart and Susan North, Historical Fashion in Detail: the 17th and 18th centuries, London: V&A Publications, 1998.","id":"AUTH406477"},"details":"p.94","free":""}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"Unique","id":"THES48864"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"Flowers","id":"x31099"},{"text":"Leaves","id":"x31545"},{"text":"floral patterns","id":"AAT10135"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["T.122-1957","T.122A-1957"],"accessionNumberNum":"122","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":1957,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Gown","Petticoat"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-05","recordCreationDate":"2006-08-15","availableToBook":false}}
