Sixteen individual chinoiserie figures, including a priest and various children and adult attendants, some playing musical instruments or singing and others bowing down in worship, were designed by Bustelli to be positioned around this central figure, raised up on a tall plinth.\r\n\r\nBustelli's figure illustrates the continuing fascination with China in fashionable society. Oriental figures had been modelled by Kändler at the influential Meissen porcelain factory from about 1740 onwards. However, an interesting fresco in the Chinese pavilion (Pagodenburg) in the grounds of Nymphenburg castle, executed in by Johann Anton Gumpp in 1719, may have given Bustelli the idea for this integrated group. It shows an idol figure seated on a towering pedestal surrounded by worshippers.","physicalDescription":"Chinoiserie figure of a 'pagod' or idol in hard-paste porcelain, modelled seated in an attitude of humility on an orange-red cushion with gilded rims and tassels on top of a tall square section plinth, wearing a striped yellow and lilac waistcoat over a long flowing pink robe with broad sleeves, his head shaven except for a short ponytail and goatee, scattered flowers and a small flaming incense burner set before him on the platform, the overhanging rim supported at the front by a triangular bracket terminating in a ram's head mask, garlands of flowers hanging from gilt loops decorating the plinth, and further strewn flowers at the foot of the plinth.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Bustelli, Franz Anton","id":"A6743"},"association":{"text":"modellers","id":"AAT25417"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Nymphenburg","id":"C7619"},"association":{"text":"manufacturers","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"hard paste porcelain","id":"AAT10663"},{"text":"enamel","id":"AAT14910"}],"techniques":[{"text":"moulded","id":"x30076"},{"text":"gilding","id":"AAT53789"},{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Hard-paste porcelain, moulded, painted in enamels and gilded","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Porcelain","id":"THES48907"}],"styles":[{"text":"Chinoiserie","id":"AAT21167"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2008BT2285","2008BT2277","2006BE6473"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"3","id":"THES263060"},"free":"","case":"CA13","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Figure","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Nymphenburg","id":"x32542"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca.1757","earliest":"1752-01-01","latest":"1761-12-31"},"association":{"text":"modelled","id":"x30779"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"26.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"11.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"13.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"shield of Bavaria mark","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"impressed on the plinth, edged with a gilded line"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"From a series of chinoiserie temple figures, modelled between 1758 and 1767.","briefDescription":"Hard-paste porcelain figure of an idol or 'pagod', seated on a tall plinth, modelled by Franz Anton Bustelli, ca. 1757, made at the Nymphenburg porcelain factory, Munich, Bavaria","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Eikelmann, Renate (ed). <i><u>Bustelli, Nymphenburger Porzellanfiguren des Rokoko</i></u> Includes essays by Katharina Hantschmann, Alfred Ziffer, Utta Bach, Peter Volk etc. Munich: C.
