He subscribed to the values outlined by Antonio Sant’Elia, and wrote his own ‘Manifesto of Futurist Architecture’ in 1920, shunning the classical past in favour of the novelty of advancing modes of transport and construction. He worked on theatre and film sets and was one of a group of artists associated with <u>Noi</u>, a review edited by Enrico Pampolini. \r\n\r\nMarchi’s signature on the bottom right of the photograph suggests that this image was intended as a promotional object for fans. Marchi looks determinedly out of the photograph, resembling a 1930s gangster. The film star-style presentation and dramatic shadow underline Marchi’s connections with movements in 1930s culture – film, futurism and design.","physicalDescription":"Photograph mounted on green card","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"photographic paper","id":"AAT14190"}],"techniques":[{"text":"photography","id":"AAT54225"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Photograph","categories":[{"text":"Portraits","id":"THES48906"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006BH4771","2015HU7103"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"516","id":"THES49526"},"free":"","case":"511M","shelf":"586","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"photograph","id":"AAT46300"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Rome","id":"x29106"},"association":{"text":"photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1929","earliest":"1924-01-01","latest":"1933-12-31"},"association":{"text":"photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Kineton Parkes in 1938","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"33","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"02/11/2015","earliest":"2015-11-02","latest":"2015-11-02"},"part":"height of card mount","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"26.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"02/11/2015","earliest":"2015-11-02","latest":"2015-11-02"},"part":"width of card mount","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Virgilio Marchi/ Roma 26 April 1929/ VII","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Signed by the sitter in black ink at the bottom right of the image."}],"objectHistory":"This photograph is from a collection bequeathed by William Kineton Parkes in 1938. Kineton Parkes was a novelist, art historian and librarian, who was best known for his writing on sculpture. He sent out questionnaires to sculptors in the 1920s, which are now held in the Archive of Art and Design. This photograph is one of many which were sent to Kineton Parkes by the sculptors he approached to complete the questionnaire.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"20thC, Anonymous photograph of Virgilio Marchi ca.1929","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Kate Best and Sophie Leighton, 'Interwar photography at the V&A: modernism and more' <u>Apollo</u> May 2006"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["5796-1938"],"accessionNumberNum":"5796","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1938,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-09","recordCreationDate":"2006-08-10","availableToBook":false}}
