His early style demonstrated classic tailoring with a subversive twist drawn from streetstyle and club culture.\r\n\r\nThis shirt, paired with the trousers, could be worn conventionally as smart officewear during the day, then rebuttoned and changed to make a bolder statement at night. This transformative style was in-line with the 1980s fashion for the customisation of clothing, and reflects Casely-Hayford’s interest in traditional tailoring and how it could be subverted and brought up to date.\n\r\nIn the designer’s own words: ‘This outfit would have been worn at some of the cooler clubs, like Wag, where the dress style was modern retro’.","physicalDescription":"Men's ensemble consisting of a cotton shirt, cotton trousers and a pair of black leather workboots.\r\n","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Joe Casely-Hayford","id":"A10112"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Moore, John","id":"AUTH330568"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":"boots"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"cotton (textile)","id":"AAT14067"},{"text":"mother of pearl","id":"AAT11835"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Cotton, with mother-of-pearl buttons; cotton, plastic buttons; leather, hand-stitched, and rubber","categories":[{"text":"Men's clothes","id":"THES49043"},{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2014GY9541","2014GY9542","2014GY9540","2014GY9544","2014GY9543","2016JA5584","2014GY8485"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"A","id":"THES404167"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"A","id":"THES404167"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES404989"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES404989"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"shirt","id":"AAT212499"}],[{"text":"trousers","id":"AAT209935"}],[{"text":"boot","id":"AAT46057"}],[{"text":"boot","id":"AAT46057"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1984","earliest":"1984-01-01","latest":"1984-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"2012","earliest":"2012-01-01","latest":"2012-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"boots"}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"T.52:2-2013","id":"O1269758"},"association":"Ensemble"},{"object":{"text":"T.52:3-2013","id":"O1269762"},"association":"Ensemble"}],"creditLine":"Given by the designer","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Registered file number 2013/590\n\nNote from RF: 'The button back trousers were considered quite sexy and were extremely popular' - Joe Casely- Hayford\r\n\r\nRetailed through Jones and Joseph in London, and Suzanne Bartsch in New York.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Men's ensemble, 'Day for Night', Joe Casely-Hayford, London, Brick Lane Collection A/W 1984","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"Ready to wear","id":"THES48866"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["T.52:1-2013","T.52:2-2013","T.52:3-2013","T.52:4-2013"],"accessionNumberNum":"52","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":2013,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Shirt","Trousers","Pair of boots"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-07-01","recordCreationDate":"2013-08-14","availableToBook":false}}
