The action of engraving with a burin creates a tapered line, which swells in the middle. The shavings of metal that are brought up are scraped or burnished off before printing. This burin was used by the artists Samuel Palmer (1805–1881), Martin Hardie (1875–1952) and Robert Austin (1895–1973) in succession.","physicalDescription":"Etching tool with four sided blade encased in long wooden handle with metal decoration.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Donaldson","id":"AUTH337147"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":"possibly"},{"name":{"text":"Samuel Palmer","id":"A2333"},"association":{"text":"user","id":"AAT145814"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wood","id":"AAT11914"},{"text":"alloy","id":"AAT10902"},{"text":"steel","id":"AAT133751"}],"techniques":[{"text":"metal-working","id":"AAT53946"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Wood, metal alloy and steel.","categories":[{"text":"Tools & Equipment","id":"THES48883"},{"text":"Printmaking techniques","id":"THES252987"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"514A","id":"THES49773"},"free":"","case":"19","shelf":"DR13","box":"EDUC 9J"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Tool","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"possibly"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"third quarter 19th century","earliest":"1850-01-01","latest":"1875-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"E.459-1953","id":"O126833"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"E.3980-1923","id":"O126830"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"E.4530-1923","id":"O126832"},"association":"Set"}],"creditLine":"Presented by Miss Dorothea Short","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"In 1850, at the age of forty-five, Samuel Palmer took up etching.
