H. Palmer. Some of the designs in the book show the influence of Albert Durer and of William Blake very strongly. Samuel Palmer knew Blake's work already, though he did not see him for the first time till the 9th October 1824. It was with reference to this sketchbook that he wrote in 1824: \"I will now begin a new sketchbook and, I hope, try to work with a child's simple feeling and with the industry of humility.\"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"'Harvest Celebration'. At the centre on a hillock, a basket or wire platform with stooks of corn on it. Above this, a large moon (inscribed HARVEST / MOON) with a halo around it. Outside the halo, two constellations. A ring of figures dances around the platform. In the foreground on the far side of a fence, two reclining figures, a woman at the left, a man at the right, each with a panel (meant for books?) alongside: that on the left inscribed in ink: The / moon / also to / rule by night / for his mercy / endureth / for ever [adapted from Psalm CXXXVI.9]; that on the right inscribed in ink: Thou / <’crown’ deleted> / crownest / the year / with thy / goodness [Psalm LXV.11]. Between these figures three children, two of them on the near side of the fence looking at the third on the far side. The third figure, between the others and apparently in swaddling clothes wears a halo-like straw headdress with springs of barley stuck in it. Possibly this child and the two reclining figures represent the Holy Family. Hilly landscapes at left and right of the composition; that at left contains two churches, one with a spire behind a small field of stooked corn; that at right has a cottage among trees, one of them a palm.\r\n\r\nLeaf 20 verso (40). Landscape with trees; in distance at right, a tower with an onion dome behind a cornfield.\r\n"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"moon","id":"x30118"},{"text":"people","id":"AAT24979"},{"text":"dancing","id":"x37546"}],"contentConcepts":[{"text":"harvest","id":"x35210"},{"text":"religion","id":"x37580"},{"text":"celebration","id":"x37935"}],"contentLiteraryRefs":["Psalms (Old Testament)"],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.2358-1928"],"accessionNumberNum":"2358","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":1928,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-07-08","recordCreationDate":"2006-08-03","availableToBook":false}}
