These belts were usually based on the kind worn by the aristocracy in late medieval and renaissance times.  \r\n\r\nThe design of this belt, with cast gilded plaques with scenes from the life of the Virgin linked by a heavy silver panzer chain, is typical of those made in the west of Norway.  The loop on the right side of the belt, as it is worn, was used to carry the house keys, which were the prerogative and symbol of a married woman.\r\n\r\nIt carries the marks of Jonas Andersen, a silversmith who worked in Bergen in the mid 17th century.\r\n","physicalDescription":"Belt of heavy silver panzer chain with cast gilded fittings.  At each end of the belt there is a long cast rectangular plaque with rounded end, which is attached to the panzer chain by a hinge.  One plaque depicts the Annunciation, and the other the Nativity.  The panzer chain is divided into two unequal parts by similar plaques, which support a matching hanger on the right side of the wearer.  The two end plaques have a hook and a corresponding loop at their outer ends.  There is a short chain attached to the loop, of alternating links of plain and grooved wire, which ends in a pendent gilded silver bead with a stylised flower on its front.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Andersen","id":"AUTH321416"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"}],"techniques":[{"text":"parcel gilding","id":"AAT233409"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Heavy silver chain with cast silver plaques, gilded on the front","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Marriage","id":"THES48921"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2019MA8801","2019MA8802","2019MA8803","2019MA8804","2019MA8805","2019MA8806","2019MA8807","2019MA8808","2019MA8809","2019MA8810"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"038","id":"THES407861"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"girdle (belt)","id":"AAT220741"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Bergen","id":"x35034"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1620-1661","earliest":"1620-01-01","latest":"1661-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"5.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"111","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"1.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'XAS' monogram in a shield-shaped frame.","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"Mark of Jonas Andersen of Bergen.","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"On back of loop holding the extension chain."},{"content":"Swan in an oval frame.","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"Mark for silver imported into France from countries without mutual customs conventions, 1893 onwards.","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Marked eight times: on the side of each loop holding the hanger, on the front of the loop holding the extension chain, on the loop of the pendent bead, and on the front of the chain half of each hinge."},{"content":"'XXXII 1/2 L'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"Original weight of belt in <i>lod</i> (1 lod =14.62 grams), ie. 475 grams.","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Inscribed on back of one terminal plaque."}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Heavy silver chain belt with silver-gilt plaques, Bergen (Norway), 1620-1661.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":""}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[{"text":"annunciation","id":"V449"},{"text":"nativity","id":"V23"}],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["M.126-1909"],"accessionNumberNum":"126","accessionNumberPrefix":"M","accessionYear":1909,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":["2019LU0302"],"recordModificationDate":"2025-12-18","recordCreationDate":"2006-08-01","availableToBook":true}}
