Traditional jewellery often incorporated Catholic religious symbols, such as the cross and heart. \r\n\r\nThe shape of this gold filigree pendant is typical of northern Portugal.  Similar pendants were also made in sheet gold, with engraved or applied filigree decoration, but always in the same shape of a heart with a curved point, and crown-shaped top.  In the 16th century traders carried Spanish and Portuguese fashions in jewellery around the world.  Heart-shaped brooches, like this pendant, are still worn today in Malaysia.\r\n\r\nIt was bought for £2 15s. at the International Exhibition, London, 1872.","physicalDescription":"Hollow heart-shaped gold filigree pendant, with curved tip and stylised crown at the top.  Decorated in the same way on both sides with a central star, with a rosette on the joint between heart and crown, and numerous discs of imitation granulation.  The suspension ring is made from a broad strip of gold sheet, decorated on each edge with twisted wire.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"}],"techniques":[{"text":"gold filigree","id":"x30721"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gold filigree pendant","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"},{"text":"Traditional jewellery (Europe)","id":"THES270343"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006BJ2641","2006BJ2640","2017JV9194"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"91M (VA)","id":"THES49137"},"free":"","case":"73","shelf":"C","box":"6"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Pendant","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Oporto","id":"x32577"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1860","earliest":"1855-01-01","latest":"1864-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"10.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"1.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'JMR' in square frame.","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"Mark of unidentified maker.","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"On base of suspension loop."},{"content":"Illegible town mark.","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"Possibly Oporto.","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"On base of suspension loop, on opposite side from the maker's mark."}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Gold filigree pendant heart, Oporto (Portugal), c.1860.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"For similar, see\r\nVasconcelos e Sousa, Gonçalo de.  ‘Colecção de Jóias do Biscainhos’, Porto 2011, ISBN: 978-9898366122, figs. 61-2."}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"heart","id":"AAT9874"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["1073-1873"],"accessionNumberNum":"1073","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1873,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":["2017KJ6884","2019LN5329","2019LT3362","2019LW5137"],"recordModificationDate":"2026-05-07","recordCreationDate":"2006-07-31","availableToBook":false}}
