Like many other Arts and Crafts designers, including C.R. Ashbee, Wilson trained originally as an architect. He became interested in metals in the early 1890s, and went on to teach at the Royal College of Art, publishing a practical manual <i>Silverwork and Jewellery</i> in 1903.\r\n\r\nPerhaps because of his architectural training, Wilson's jewels are often notable for their three-dimensional construction, a feature which can be seen in this belt clasp.","physicalDescription":"Silver belt clasp, in two parts, set with amethysts, garnets, williamsite, moonstones, agate, chalcedony and cat's-eye quartz with a large, central, openwork boss ornamented with sprays.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Wilson, Henry","id":"A6194"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Wilson, Henry","id":"A6194"},"association":{"text":"manufacturers","id":"AAT25230"},"note":"workshop of, probably"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"},{"text":"amethyst","id":"AAT11133"},{"text":"garnet","id":"AAT11097"},{"text":"williamsite","id":"x41472"},{"text":"moonstone","id":"AAT11090"},{"text":"agate","id":"AAT11135"},{"text":"chalcedony","id":"AAT11134"},{"text":"quartz","id":"AAT11132"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver, set with amethysts, garnets, williamsite, moonstones, agate, chalcedony and cat's-eye quartz with openwork","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[{"text":"Arts and Crafts","id":"AAT21205"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AX8862","2006AX8713"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"91 (VA)","id":"THES49703"},"free":"","case":"28","shelf":"D","box":"5"},{"current":{"text":"91 (VA)","id":"THES49703"},"free":"","case":"28","shelf":"D","box":"5"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Belt clasp","id":""}],[{"text":"Belt clasp","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1905","earliest":"1900-01-01","latest":"1909-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Formerly in the collection of Charles and Lavinia Handley-Read.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"10.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"19.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"4.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Probably made in Henry Wilson's London workshop.
