An imminent publication of prints after work by his early mentor Joseph Farrington may have inspired Constable to present his own take on the Lakes scenery. Compared to the more picturesque scenes of his contemporaries, Constable's Leatheswater shows the Lake District in a more barren guise. With its precise lines and carefully-applied wash, this is likely to have been the drawing worked up to give to the printmaker, Henry Dawe (1790-1848), rather than one made on the spot. Constable had met Henry when helping paint the background of a portrait for his brother, potraitist George Dawe (1781-1829). Mezzotint was Henry Dawe's specialism and the technique Constable would elect fifteen years later for his project English Landscape."}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[{"text":"Lake District","id":"x35878"}],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"mountains","id":"AAT8795"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["194-1888"],"accessionNumberNum":"194","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1888,"otherNumbers":[{"type":{"text":"Reynolds catalogue no.","id":"THES50402"},"number":"94, plate 54."}],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-08-04","recordCreationDate":"2006-07-26","availableToBook":false}}
