The central panel shows two young women flirting with a man. One of the women is gesturing with a closed fan alluding to the potential role of a fan in romantic interchanges. The portraits to either side are framed with metal embroidery and imitate portrait miniatures.  The central image is signed 'Rosie Haughton'. We do not know in what capacity this artist painted the fan, or whether she was a professional or amateur. In the 19th century fan painting was considered an appropriate pass-time for genteel women.","physicalDescription":"Folding fan and cardboard box.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Bellini Ltd.","id":"AUTH315593"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Embroidered and painted silk gauze and silk, with sticks of carved, pierced and painted tortoiseshell, and fabric covered cardboard lined with padded satin and stamped paper","categories":[{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"},{"text":"Womenswear","id":"THES49044"},{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Evening wear","id":"THES48999"},{"text":"Embroidery","id":"THES48960"},{"text":"Fans","id":"THES253017"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006AR8909","2020ML4888"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES327276"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES327276"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Fan box","id":""}],[{"text":"Fan","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1880s","earliest":"1880-01-01","latest":"1889-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given in memory of HRH Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Folding fan of embroidered and painted silk, painted by Rosie Haughton, and cardboard box, Bellini, England, 1880s","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["T.57A-1981","T.57-1981"],"accessionNumberNum":"57","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":1981,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Fan box","Fan"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-05","recordCreationDate":"2006-07-24","availableToBook":true}}
