The intricate floral pattern was created by building up many layers of lacquer and then carving them.\t\r\n\r\nLacquer was a craft from East Asia. Chinese workers had been tapping the sap of the lacquer tree from about 3000 BC. The filtered and purified lacquer was then applied to a base, usually of wood, and coloured.","physicalDescription":"Circular red lacquer box carved with camellia branches on the top and five groups of flowers on the sides; the inside and the base are lacquered in black.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"lacquer","id":"AAT14916"}],"techniques":[{"text":"lacquering","id":"AAT53796"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Lacquer, carved","categories":[{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"},{"text":"Lacquerware","id":"THES49004"}],"styles":[{"text":"Yongle","id":"AAT18443"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2008BW4832","2006BB9695","2006BB9694","2006BB9693","2006BB9676","2006BB9675","2006BF3682","2021MY5672","2021MY5673","2021MY5674","2021MY5675","2021MY5676"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES370456"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES370456"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES375566"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Box","id":""}],[{"text":"Lid","id":""}],[{"text":"Storage Box","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"China","id":"x29398"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1403-1424","earliest":"1403-01-01","latest":"1424-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Sir Harry and Lady Garner","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"22.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Yongle mark on the base","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Formerly Chester Beatty (Garner, Chinese Lacquer p.86)","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Woo, China, lacquer, carved\n\nWoo, China, lacquer, carved\n\nWoo, China, lacquer, carved","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Garner, Harry (1979) <i>Chinese Lacquer</i>, London-Boston: Faber and Faber, p.86, pl. 32, col. pl.
