Dyce also published them in <i>The Drawing Book of the Government School of Design</i> in 1842-1843. In his introduction to the latter, he described the basic steps for the early training of students in drawing. Step 1 was to copy 'combinations of right lines and regular curves'; Step 2 was to copy these geometrical diagrams of Greek ornament, such as the acanthus leaf shown here; Steps 3 and 4 were to study their ornamental shapes in two or three dimensions, working from drawings and casts.<br><br>The 'outlines' were first used in the School of Design and formed the basis of the elementary drawing lessons promoted by the science and art department in British schools. Although some criticised them for being uninspiring for students, they remained influential until the 1870s.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Dyce, William (RA)","id":"A8356"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Chapman & Hall","id":"A9673"},"association":{"text":"publisher","id":"AAT25574"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[{"text":"lithography","id":"AAT53271"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Lithograph, ink on paper, mounted on card","categories":[{"text":"Printed pages & sheets","id":"THES48904"},{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"},{"text":"Scotland","id":"THES262877"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2013GH9678","2013GH9677"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"125C","id":"THES49896"},"free":"","case":"WS","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"diagrams","id":"AAT15387"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1842-1843","earliest":"1842-01-01","latest":"1843-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"31","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"37.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions checked: Measured; 10/10/2000 by PaperCons","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Lettered with plate numbers 'XXI' and 'XXII'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":"A8877"},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"From 'Elementary Outlines of Ornament'By William Dyce RA (born in Aberdeen, 1806, died in London, 1864); published by Chapman & Hall, Strand, London","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Mounted teaching Diagram from Dyce's Drawing Book; plates 21 (recto) and 22 (verso), From 'Elementary Outlines of Ornament' By William Dyce RA, published by Chapman & Hall, London, 1842-1843","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"From 'Elementary Outlines of Ornament'By William Dyce RA.","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"geometric patterns","id":"AAT165213"},{"text":"scrolls (motifs)","id":"AAT10094"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"British Galleries:\nThis diagram was published by William Dyce, a well-known painter and Superintendent of the Government School of Design at South Kensington, London.
