Many mourning jewels have inscriptions that record the name and dates of the dead person.\r\n\r\nFrom 1760 there was a new vogue for memorial medallions or lockets. These became especially popular in Britain, though similar work was produced throughout Europe. \r\n\r\nThe lockets could be bought ready made, and the designs were standardised. Neo-classical motifs of funerary urns, plinths and obelisks joined the more traditional cherubs, angels and weeping willows. Hair was preserved as curls within the locket, or cut up and used to create designs.","physicalDescription":"Gold locket in the form of an urn, set with pearls and garnets, enclosing plaited hair","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"},{"text":"pearl","id":"AAT11827"},{"text":"garnet","id":"AAT11097"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gold set with pearls and garnets, enclosing plaited hair","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Death","id":"THES48970"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006BG8983"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"91M","id":"THES49137"},"free":"","case":"81","shelf":"D3","box":"3"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Locket","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1780","earliest":"1775-01-01","latest":"1784-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Mrs Isobel Baynes","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"3.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"1.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"0.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Gold locket in the form of an urn, set with pearls and garnets, enclosing plaited hair, England, about 1780","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"urns","id":"AAT129425"}],"contentConcepts":[{"text":"mourning","id":"AAT238450"}],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["M.58-1950"],"accessionNumberNum":"58","accessionNumberPrefix":"M","accessionYear":1950,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":["2019LN9708","2019LR2967","2019LR0927","2019LT2828","2019LT6970","2019LW8543","2019LW5706"],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-05","recordCreationDate":"2006-07-19","availableToBook":false}}
