From 1760 there was a new vogue for memorial medallions or lockets. These became especially popular in Britain, though similar work was produced throughout Europe. \r\n\r\nThe lockets could be bought ready made, and the designs were standardised. Neo-classical motifs of funerary urns, plinths and obelisks joined the more traditional cherubs, angels and weeping willows. Hair was preserved as curls within the locket or cut up and used to create designs.\r\n\r\nNot all sentimental jewellery is associated with death. Some pieces express love, friendship and devotion for the living or act as a visual keepsake.","physicalDescription":"Pair of enamelled gold clasps with ivory plaques painted in watercolour with trophies set with hair and rose cut diamonds","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"},{"text":"ivory","id":"AAT11857"},{"text":"watercolour","id":"x33202"},{"text":"hair","id":"AAT11814"},{"text":"diamond","id":"AAT11084"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Enamelled gold with ivory plaques painted in watercolour set with hair and rose cut diamonds","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006BG9016","2006BG9017","2006BG9014","2006BG9015","2017KC2583"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"91M","id":"THES49137"},"free":"","case":"81","shelf":"D4","box":"14"},{"current":{"text":"91M","id":"THES49137"},"free":"","case":"81","shelf":"D4","box":"14"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Clasp","id":""}],[{"text":"Clasp","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1775-1800","earliest":"1775-01-01","latest":"1800-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"3.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"both","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"2.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"both","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"0.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"both","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Pair of enamelled gold clasps with ivory plaques painted in waterolour with trophies set with hair and rose-cut diamonds, England,1775-1800","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"trophies (motif)","id":"x38269"},{"text":"plaques (flat objects)","id":"AAT10262"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["2196A-1899","2196-1899"],"accessionNumberNum":"2196","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1899,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Clasp [1]","Clasp [2]"],"assets":["2018LB9919","2018LB9933","2019LM5650","2019LR6046","2019LT3759","2019LT3332","2019LW9687","2019LW1424"],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-05","recordCreationDate":"2006-07-19","availableToBook":false}}
