From 1760 there was a new vogue for memorial medallions or lockets. These became especially popular in Britain, though similar work was produced throughout Europe. \r\n\r\nThe lockets could be bought ready made, and the designs were standardised. Neo-classical motifs of funerary urns, plinths and obelisks joined the more traditional cherubs, angels and weeping willows. Hair was preserved as curls within the locket or cut up and used to create designs.\r\n\r\nNot all sentimental jewellery is associated with death. Some pieces express love, friendship and devotion for the living or act as a visual keepsake.","physicalDescription":"Gold brooch, silver, rose cut diamonds, set with a basket of flowers in seed pearls, mother of pearl and gold mounted on blue enamel.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"},{"text":"seed pearls","id":"x30724"},{"text":"glass","id":"AAT10797"},{"text":"diamond","id":"AAT11084"},{"text":"enamel","id":"AAT14910"},{"text":"mother of pearl","id":"AAT11835"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gold, silver, rose cut diamonds with seed pearls, mother of pearl and blue enamel","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006BH1331","2006BH1332"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"91M","id":"THES49137"},"free":"","case":"81","shelf":"D4","box":"10"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Brooch","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1775-1800","earliest":"1775-01-01","latest":"1800-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"4.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"2.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"1.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Gold brooch,silver, rose-cut diamonds, seed pearls, mother of pearl, enamel, hair and gold mounted on blue enamel,  France, 1775-1800","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"baskets","id":"AAT194498"},{"text":"flowers","id":"x35571"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["1726-1869"],"accessionNumberNum":"1726","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1869,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":["2017KM0607","2019LP4982","2019LT3175","2019LT1761","2019LW2151","2019LW1719"],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-16","recordCreationDate":"2006-07-18","availableToBook":false}}
