Many mourning jewels have inscriptions that record the name and dates of the dead person.\r\n\r\nFrom 1760 there was a new vogue for memorial medallions or lockets. These became especially popular in Britain, though similar work was produced throughout Europe. \r\n\r\nThe lockets could be bought ready made, and the designs were standardised. Neo-classical motifs of funerary urns, plinths and obelisks joined the more traditional cherubs, angels and weeping willows. Hair was preserved as curls within the locket, or cut up and used to create designs.","physicalDescription":"Locket with an enamelled gold frame, with enamel decoration enclosing a composition of an urn in gold, seed pearls and mother of pearl under glass","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"},{"text":"seed pearls","id":"x30724"},{"text":"mother of pearl","id":"AAT11835"},{"text":"glass","id":"AAT10797"},{"text":"enamel","id":"AAT14910"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Enamelled gold, seed pearls and mother of pearl under glass","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006BH1327","2006BH1328"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"91M","id":"THES49137"},"free":"","case":"81","shelf":"D3","box":"10"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Locket","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"possibly"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1775-1800","earliest":"1775-01-01","latest":"1800-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"3.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"0.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Part of a group of memorial and mourning jewels bought from Dr Marco Guastalla, acting on behalf of 'an English lady residing in Italy' (museum numbers 846-1888 to 989-1888)","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Locket with an enamelled gold frame, with enamel decoration enclosing a composition of an urn in gold, seed pearls and mother of pearl under glass, possibly France, 1775-1800","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"urns","id":"AAT129425"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["926-1888"],"accessionNumberNum":"926","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1888,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":["2017KJ4480","2019LR1809","2019LT3174","2019LT2840","2019LW4272","2019LW3061"],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-16","recordCreationDate":"2006-07-18","availableToBook":false}}
