Stark imagery such as skeletons, skulls and winged hourglasses were frequently used. In this case a skeleton lies on a coffin inscribed 'I rest' while two angels hold the deceased's initials - MT - in gold wire aloft. The background is a panel of woven hair, while the decorative elements were produced as standard components in stamped and enamelled gold. \r\n\r\nThe slide was a very popular type of jewel at this date. Fitted with two flat loops at the back, a ribbon of silk or woven hair would be threaded through enabling it to be worn around the neck or wrist.","physicalDescription":"Gold slide, with an enamelled skeleton on a coffin inscribed I Rest and two gold angels supporting a cartouche with the initials MT embroidered in gold thread on a background of hair and foil, under rock crystal","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"},{"text":"gold thread","id":"x30128"},{"text":"enamel","id":"AAT14910"},{"text":"rock crystal","id":"AAT11152"},{"text":"foil","id":"AAT160106"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gold slide decorated with gold, enamel gold thread, hair and foil","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Death","id":"THES48970"},{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006BG9049","2006BG9050","2006AU1818"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"91M","id":"THES49137"},"free":"","case":"81","shelf":"D1","box":"13"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Slide","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1700","earliest":"1695-01-01","latest":"1704-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Frank Ward","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"2.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"0.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"I Rest","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"inscription"},{"content":"MT","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"initialled, cartouche"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Gold slide, with an enamelled skeleton on a coffin inscribed I Rest and two angels supporting a cartouche with the initials MT embroidered in gold thread on a background of hair and foil, under rock crystal, made in England, about 1700","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"memento mori","id":"AAT257053"},{"text":"skeleton","id":"AAT191778"},{"text":"coffins","id":"AAT197585"},{"text":"angels","id":"x30526"},{"text":"cartouches","id":"AAT10256"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["M.14-1960"],"accessionNumberNum":"14","accessionNumberPrefix":"M","accessionYear":1960,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":["2019LN4624","2019LT3443","2019LW3156","2021MV1483"],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-16","recordCreationDate":"2006-07-18","availableToBook":false}}
