Dorothea (or Dorothy or Dora) Jordan (1761-1816) was an extremely popular and versatile actress by 1804, known for her performance in 'breeches roles' where she could display her shapely legs, and for her 20-year liaison with Prince William, the Duke of Clarence, with whom she had at least ten illigitimate children. Her stage career lasted from 1777 until her retirement in 1815 when the critic William Hazlitt wrote admiringly of her: 'Mrs Jordan's excellences were all natural to her. It was not as an actress, but as herself, that she charmed everyone.'\n\nThis image was published in Volume I of Thomas Holcroft's 1805 publication <i>The Theatrical Recorder, </i>in which Holcroft added plates such as this more for their interest in the costumes than the likenesses of the actors. \n\n\n\n\n","physicalDescription":"Hand-coloured engraving of Mrs. Jordan in profile, looking to her right, her right hand lowered, standing in a castle setting in front of an arched window, ","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Mercier, C","id":"AUTH361976"},"association":{"text":"Engraver","id":"AAT25165"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Symonds, Henry Delahoy","id":"AUTH324864"},"association":{"text":"Artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"Publishers","id":"AAT25574"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Holcroft, Thomas","id":"N9135"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"printing ink","id":"AAT187371"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"print-making","id":"AAT131119"},{"text":"engraving","id":"AAT53225"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Engraving, printed ink on paper","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2013GR9926"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES356570"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":"AAT41273"}],[{"text":"engraving","id":"AAT41340"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"x46159"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1805","earliest":"1805-01-01","latest":"1805-12-31"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"S.1146-1983","id":"O1154804"},"association":"Object"}],"creditLine":"Harry R.
