Johnston in The Venetian Outlaw","type":"published title"}],"summaryDescription":"<i>The Theatrical Inquisitor</i> (Vol. XLVII) noted in its May 1805 edition that this new play, adapted by Robert Elliston (from a French play by Pixérécourt pirated from a German original, and a version of Mr. Lewis’s novel <i>The Brave of Venice), </i>was presented at Drury Lane on 26th April for Mr. Elliston’s Benefit, with Mr. Raymond as the Doge of Venice, Mr. Elliston as Vivaldi, Mr. Raymond  as Alsieri, Mr. Barrymore as Orsano, and  Mrs. Johnston as Rosina, noting that Mrs. Johnston: ‘displayed extraordinary discrimination and ability in Rosara’.\n\r\nThis image was published in Volume I of Thomas Holcroft’s 1805 publication <i>The Theatrical Recorder, </i>in which Holcroft added plates such as this more for their interest in the costumes than the likenesses of the actors. An article in the magazine is less complimentary to the histrionic powers of the leading lady than that in <i>The Theatrical Inquisitor</i> however, commenting on: ‘the screaming and violence of Mrs. Johnston’ mentioned by some who had seen the piece'. Not having seen the play, Holcroft said he could not affirm or deny this, but warned her against seeking applause by such means, adding that: ‘In general she has so much talent, and so natural and charming a manner of speaking, that it must truly grieve any true judge of theatrical merit to see these qualities debased, or in danger of change for the worse. If she can acquire a still more perfect articulation and greater power of voice, with a still nicer discriminating feeling of the passions, she will bid fair to become one of the first performers on the stage.'\n\n\n\r\n\n\n\n\r\n","physicalDescription":"Hand-coloured engraving of Mrs. H.
