The play, written in 1745, centres on the tragic conflict between love and duty in which Tancred, descendant of the murdered King Manfred, and Sigismunda, daughter of Siffreidi, are embroiled.\n\nHolman was one of the leading actors in the dispute between the actors and management at Covent Garden Theatre that led to the publication in 1800 of <i>A Statement of the Differences Subsisting Between the Proprietors and Performers of the Theatre Royal Covent Garden. </i>He resigned or was dismissed from Covent Garden after not accepting the Lord Chamberlain's resolution to the dispute.
