It could have been used by either a man or a woman.","physicalDescription":"A tiered box in three sections, black lacquered surface, of cylindrical six-lobed form, with rounded cover and bottom section. The bottom is fitted with a recessed tray. The central section also carries a recessed tray, which has an internal lid. The top section fits over this internal tray and lid. This piece is illustrated in Lovell, plate 5b. In her discussion, Lovell inclines to a 12th - 13th century date, adducing a painting in the Zhou Wenju tradition as evidence. She accepts pieces with sharp points to the lobes as being later in date than this example, into the Yuan dynasty. Wang Shixiang 9/1983 tentatively suggested a Yuan date, but accepted that the excavated Yuan pieces from the Ren family tombs were both higher in profile and lighter in construction.
