He became a pupil of Ary Scheffer in Paris between 1840 and 1845 but mainly produced landscape and genre paintings. \r\n\r\nThis painting is a fine example of the little known oeuvre of Pierre Lacaze, a genre and landscape painter. This work can be interpreted as a stock character portrait: it shows a young pupil doing his homework with some manifest reluctance. This type of naïve pictures was quite popular during the 19th century and close to the Biedermeier imagery.","physicalDescription":"A young boy seated at a school desk with an open notebook in front of him and folded sheets of paper; his hat is on the desk, a ball under his chair and a hoop on the floor.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Lacaze, Pierre","id":"A17824"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"oil paint","id":"AAT15050"},{"text":"millboard","id":"AAT14233"}],"techniques":[{"text":"oil painting","id":"AAT178684"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Oil on millboard","categories":[{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"}],"styles":[{"text":"French School","id":"x31263"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006BH7426"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"B","id":"THES304890"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"oil paintings","id":"AAT33799"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Switzerland","id":"x29199"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1840-1850","earliest":"1835-01-01","latest":"1850-12-31"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Rev. In frame. Signed. Swiss. Dated 1855'; bequeathed by Rev. Chauncey Hare Townshend, 1868.\n\nHistorical significance: This painting was bequeathed by the Rev. Townshend who owned a large collection of 19th-century landscape and genre paintings. It is not unlikely that Townshend, who resided part of the year in Lausanne, acquired this painting directly from the artist.\r\nThe museum of Freiburg owns several of his works.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Oil Painting, 'The Young Student', Pierre Lacaze, Swiss school, ca. 1840 - 1850","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Kauffmann, C.M. <u>Catalogue of Foreign Paintings, II. 1800-1900 </u>, London: Victoria and Albert Museum, 1973, pp. 59-60, cat. no. 130."}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"hoop","id":"AAT218130"},{"text":"ball","id":"AAT239662"},{"text":"hat","id":"AAT46106"},{"text":"desk","id":"AAT39338"},{"text":"notebook","id":"AAT27195"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["1615-1869"],"accessionNumberNum":"1615","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1869,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-16","recordCreationDate":"2006-07-06","availableToBook":true}}
