It is crowned with many temples and\r\nshrines. The site attracts thousands of pilgrims,\r\nwho climb up to the temples from the town of\r\nPalitana below on a stone path with over 3000\r\nsteps.\r\nLarge paintings of Shatrunjaya, like this one,\r\nare hung in Jain temples elsewhere so that those\r\nunable to visit the site can contemplate it.\r\nDevotees gain religious merit by doing this.\r\nThe major temples are identifiable in this\r\npainting. Also recognisable are key features of\r\nthe site such as the Shatrunjaya River (lower left).\r\nA horse and carriage painted in the courtyard\r\nof the Adishvara temple (top left) suggest that the\r\npainting may have been made to commemorate\r\na navanu pilgrimage. This arduous pilgrimage\r\ninvolves 99 ascents of the hill accompanied by\r\nacts of worship and periods of fasting. Completion\r\nof the pilgrimage was traditionally celebrated by\r\na procession with the pilgrimage leader riding in\r\na chariot.","date":{"text":"27/09/2013","earliest":"2013-09-27","latest":"2013-09-27"}}],"partNumbers":["IS.32-2012"],"accessionNumberNum":"32","accessionNumberPrefix":"IS","accessionYear":2012,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-09-10","recordCreationDate":"2012-10-26","availableToBook":false}}
