The doll was produced during the 1930s, at a time when these types of dolls were extremely popular. This doll has a composition head (made from glue and sawdust), which was a common material used to make dolls heads during the 1920s, through to the 1940s. Unfortunately there is no distinct maker's mark, which implies that the doll is a copy from the larger doll companies which manufactured the composition dolls at the time. Sailor dolls were usually marked with the name of a particular ship. The SS Hamburg was a German ocean liner owned by the Hamburg America Line, built by the Blohm & Voss Shipbuilders of Hamburg, Germany and launched in 1926. She became a naval accommodation ship for the German Navy in 1940. On 7 March 1945 during the evacuation of the forces from the Eastern Front, she struck a mine and sank.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"unknown","id":"AUTH317916"},"association":{"text":"makers","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Children & Childhood","id":"THES48980"},{"text":"Dolls & Toys","id":"THES48967"},{"text":"Musical instruments","id":"THES48919"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"YVA","id":"THES48593"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"SR011","id":"THES341117"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"SR011","id":"THES341117"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"doll","id":"AAT211087"}],[{"text":"Accordion","id":"AAT42819"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Germany","id":"x28873"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1930s","earliest":"1930-01-01","latest":"1939-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mrs Mary Clemow","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"D.
