Built by the circus entrepreneur Louis Dejean (1797-1879) as his circus company's winter home, it opened on the 11th December 1852 as the Cirque Napoléon but was renamed the Cirque d'Hiver in 1870.\n\nThe Cirque d'Hiver was a popular resort of many of the artists who painted circus subjects in the late 19th century including Henri Toulouse-Lautrec and Georges Seurat.
