Sketches by Valentine Gross c 1910.\n\nDiaghilev Ballets Russes Les Sylphides, choreographed by Fokine and decor by Benois was first premiered in Paris at Théâtre du Châtelet on 02 June1909, according to Diaghilev and The Golden Age of The Ballets Russes 1909 - 1929, edited by Jane Pritchard, first published by V&A Publishing in 2010. However, Richard Buckle indictes in his book Nijinsky on Stage, published in London by Studio Vista in 1971, that the preminary sketches of Les Sylphides by Valentine Gross are likely to had been drawn in Theatre de l'Opera in 1910 or in Théâtre du Châtelet in 1912 (p. 19). \n\nThe sketches are part of the Valentine Gross Archive (THM/165), held by the V&A Department of Theatre and Performance. Valentine Gross Archive contains research material and artwork, including sketches, studies, drawings, pastels and illustrations. Only the artwork materials have been catalogued with museum numbers and given item level descriptions found in the Search the Collections webpage. \r\n\r\nValentine Gross, a.k.a. Valentine Hugo, was a French art student in Paris in the 1910s. She became a ballet enthusiast, illustrator, researcher and painter. Valentine Gross witnessed annual seasons of Diaghilev Ballets Russes in Paris and made preminary sketches during performances and rehearsals between 1909 and 1914. She later worked them up into pencil or coloured drawings of various degrees of finish including illustrations and paintings.\r\n\r\nSome of the sketches feature in the book Nijinsky on Stage by Richard Buckle, published in London by Studio Vista in 1971. \n\r\n","physicalDescription":"Sketch depicting a female dancer in arabesque pose and two studies of head and shoulders in pencil on tracing paper, front only.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Valentine Gross","id":"A1811"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"tracing paper","id":"AAT14161"},{"text":"pencil","id":"x30347"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing","id":"x32498"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pencil on tracing paper","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Dance","id":"THES252984"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2016JE1206"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES352280"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawing","id":"x32498"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"c 1910","earliest":"1905-01-01","latest":"1914-12-31"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"THM/165","id":"ARC64839"},"association":"Archive record"}],"creditLine":"Given by Jean Hugo","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"38.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"maximum","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"25.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"maximum","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Irregular dimension - right bottom corner missing and britle right edge.","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Studies of a female ballet dancer in Les Sylphides, Diaghilev Ballet Russes.
