He was born in Ramsgate, Kent, to Jules and Agnes Richeux, one of their six children, of whom one died in infancy. Jules Richeux became the lessee of the Artillery Theatre, Woolwich, in 1909, but following his death in 1911 at the age of 48, his wife took over the running of the theatre. In 1914 she married Frank Littler who adopted the five remaining children, including the eldest Blanche (b.1899), Prince (b.1901) and Emile, all of whom took their stepfather’s name.\n\nThe artist Robert Stewart Sherriffs (1906-1960) was born in Scotland and studied art at the Edinburgh School of Art before moving to London in 1927. In 1930 he became the film and theatre caricaturist for the magazine The Sketch and also contributed drawings to The Radio Times and Theatre World. He became a war artist during the war, after which he succeeded J.H. Dowd as a film caricaturist for Punch and produced more work for The Radio Times. He acknowledged the influence on his work of Aubrey Beardsley and Alphonse Mucha and considered faces as 'patterns to be studied and memorised - not patiently drawn from life.'","physicalDescription":"Caricature of Emile Littler in silhouette, looking to his left, drawn with black and grey ink.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Sherriffs, Robert Stewart","id":"A24571"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing (image-making)","id":"AAT54196"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Ink on paper","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Scotland","id":"THES262877"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2014GX5087"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"008","id":"THES356678"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawings","id":"AAT33973"}],[{"text":"caricatures","id":"AAT15634"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca.1950","earliest":"1945-01-01","latest":"1954-12-31"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Judy Littler Manners","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"25.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"21.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'EMILE / LITTLER'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Written verso in pencil, possibly by the artist"},{"content":"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":" ","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"This drawing was originally owned by Emile Littler and was presented to the Museum by his daughter Judy Littler Manners as part of the archive relating to Cora Goffin and Emile Littler, THM/408.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Drawing of Emile Littler (1903-1985) by Robert Stewart Sherriffs (1906-1960).
