Seven of these reliefs differ so radically that they cannot be given to one artist.  The attribution does, however, seem justified, when applied to the versions in the Louvre and in Siena (shown in this cast), which are identical in composition and appear to be by the same hand.  They both bear the Piccolomini arms and have provenances linked with the Piccolomini family, as they came from Pienza and the Palazzo Piccolomini (delle Papesse) in Siena respectively.  A lost model by Donatello (1386-1466) has been proposed for the motif of the Virgin and Child, but the composition is not particularly reminiscent of Donatello.","briefDescription":"Plaster cast relief, Virgin and Child, after a marble original by the Master of the Piccolomini Madonna, cast made by Giuseppe de Ricco, 1891","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"This object is a 19th century cast of the 15th century original.","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[{"text":"The Virgin Mary","id":"N480"},{"text":"Jesus Christ","id":"N1515"}],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["REPRO.1891-131"],"accessionNumberNum":"131","accessionNumberPrefix":"REPRO","accessionYear":1891,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":["2019LU2917"],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-16","recordCreationDate":"1999-12-07","availableToBook":false}}
