They were made in 2010 by the company Chang De 昌德, owned by the Chen 陈 family, in Dehua  德化, China. The cups and saucers were made to order.\r\n\r\nThe shape of the cups and saucers combines an elegant, sleek design with traditional motifs derived by the Chinese  classical repertoire of the Dehua workshops and kilns. The handles are shaped as lotus stems, the lotus being a flower  associated with the purity of the soul in Buddhist iconography, as it grows in muddy ponds. The saucers are decorated  with one or three rings of tiny hands with long and thin fingers, evoking the hands moulded on figures of the Buddhist  deity Guanyin, Bodhisattva of Compassion and Bringer of sons. Figures of Guanyin have been one of the specialities of  the ceramic industry in Dehua since the 17th century.
