The song begins with the lines 'Ladies and gentlemen how do you do, I am the gorilla of Monsieur Chaillu'.\r\n\r\nPaul Chaillu was probably the first white man to see a gorilla. In his 1859 book Explorations and Adventures in Equatorial Africa he tells the story of his travels, including chasing the gorilla, and cannibal tribes which filed their teeth to keep them sharp. He claimed to have travelled 8,000 miles on foot during his journey. He shot and stuffed 2,000 birds and brought back the first specimen gorilla. However people ridiculed his achievements and coined the phrase 'Du Chaillu' , referring to someone who would tell wild stories. Nevertheless, Chaillu's expedition was defended by the Royal Geographic society of Great Britain. It is thought that Chaillu was the inspiration for the book Tarzan of the Apes written by Edgar Rice Burroughs.","physicalDescription":"Illustrated man with gorilla face wearing a tuxedo.\r\nScore includes lyrics and music for <i>Mr Gorilla, The Lion of the Season</i>.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Stannard","id":"AUTH320680"},"association":{"text":"printers","id":"x31107"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Concanen, Lee & Siebe","id":"A26663"},"association":{"text":"Lithographers","id":"AAT25175"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"}],"techniques":[{"text":"printing","id":"AAT53319"},{"text":"lithograph","id":"x39981"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Lithograph on paper","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2014GX6494","2006AG8915"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"008","id":"THES356700"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"008","id":"THES356700"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"008","id":"THES356700"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"008","id":"THES356700"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"008","id":"THES356700"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"score","id":"AAT26427"}],[{"text":"sheet music","id":"AAT26430"}],[{"text":"print","id":"AAT41273"}],[{"text":"score","id":"AAT26427"}],[{"text":"sheet music","id":"AAT26430"}],[{"text":"print","id":"AAT41273"}],[{"text":"score","id":"AAT26427"}],[{"text":"sheet music","id":"AAT26430"}],[{"text":"print","id":"AAT41273"}],[{"text":"score","id":"AAT26427"}],[{"text":"sheet music","id":"AAT26430"}],[{"text":"print","id":"AAT41273"}],[{"text":"score","id":"AAT26427"}],[{"text":"sheet music","id":"AAT26430"}],[{"text":"print","id":"AAT41273"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"New York","id":"x29030"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1860","earliest":"1855-01-01","latest":"1864-12-31"},"association":{"text":"printed and published","id":"x35383"},"note":"The partnership of Alfred Concanen and Thomas Wales Lee as Concanen & Lee, and later Concanen, Lee & Siebe, with the addition of Henry Herapath Siebe (1832-1887), was dissolved on the 25th February 1865"}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Gabrielle Enthoven Collection","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"34.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"approx","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"25","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Music score for <i>Mr Gorilla, The Lion of The Season</i>, sung by Howard Paul (1830-1905).
