In a series of fashion photographs taken in Brixton market for 19 magazine, Francis showcased black British style against an urban backdrop. Brixton was one of the areas in London which had developed a large black British community following migration, mainly from the Caribbean, in the post-war period. Francis’ photographs depict this multicultural urban community in contrast to the bold glamour of 1970s fashion.\r\n\r\nThe V&A acquired nine photographs by Armet Francis as part of the Staying Power project. Photographs by his contemporaries Neil Kenlock and Charlie Phillips were also acquired as part of the project. Staying Power is a five year partnership between the V&A and Black Cultural Archives. The project aims to explore black British experience from the 1950s to the 1990s through photographs acquired by the V&A and oral histories conducted by Black Cultural Archives.","physicalDescription":"A colour photograph of two black women in a market, captured mid-stride. One wears a yellow outfit, the other blue. Both are wearing floppy straw hats and flares. They are carrying a woven bag, each holding a handle. A shopfront with the name 'Hip City' can just be made out in the background of the photograph.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Francis, Armet","id":"AUTH319927"},"association":{"text":"photographer","id":"x43821"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"photographic paper","id":"AAT14190"}],"techniques":[{"text":"c-type process","id":"THES258425"},{"text":"photography","id":"AAT54225"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"C-type print","categories":[{"text":"Photographs","id":"THES48910"},{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Black History","id":"THES48989"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"},{"text":"Caribbean","id":"THES286921"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2013GT1709"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLF","id":"THES49656"},"free":"","case":"SP","shelf":"8","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"photograph","id":"AAT46300"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Brixton","id":"x36752"},"association":{"text":"photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1973","earliest":"1973-01-01","latest":"1973-12-31"},"association":{"text":"photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"2012","earliest":"2012-01-01","latest":"2012-12-31"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"x46159"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"E.104-2013","id":"O1273474"},"association":"Series"},{"object":{"text":"E.106-2013","id":"O1273476"},"association":"Series"}],"creditLine":"Supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
