In 1937 he established a school for the study of film design and was known both for his own abilities and for his skill in teaching others. \n\nThe News Theatre at Victoria Station was a tiny Art Deco cinema seating 235, situated above the station concourse and reached by a flight of stairs, which explains the motif of steps in Carrick's decorative scheme. The cinema opened in September 1933 and showed newsreels and cartoons to entertain waiting passengers. Carrick's design, entitled 'Items of News', depicts a range of entertainments, including a Punch and Judy show, a circus and a black jazz band, and a variety of leisure activities. There is some work taking place, as represented by a group of labourers digging a hole, but only one of the men is actually working. \n\nThe cinema closed in 1981 and was later demolished. ","physicalDescription":"Design for the decoration scheme of the lobby of the News Theatre, Victoria Station, with the title '\"Items of News\" SCHEME 2' in red paint and 'VICTORIA NEWS THEATRE' in black paint, lower left. It shows five flights of steps of varying lengths, running across and down the design from left, the side of each tread painted in turquoise. On each step is a scene representing a form of entertainment or an activity. On the first flight of steps: a Victorian couple in horse and trap, two men carousing outside an inn; on the second: a Punch and Judy show, a circus with a rearing liberty horse, a rural scene with young lovers sitting beside a haystack; on the third: a game of tennis, a man and woman sitting on a park bench watching two children playing with a hoop, two dancers beneath a lamp post, two workmen watching another digging a hole, a swimming pool with divers, a paddle steamer with two sailors dancing a hornpipe on the dockside; on the fourth: a black jazz band, a tropical scene with a dancer and a kneeling drummer beneath two palm trees; on the fifth: a matador. At upper right, a rectangle divided by red lines into nine sections (three rows and three columns) with, running across the top, a 19th century stream engine pulling carriages and trucks. At lower left, a stepped area in which are written the title and artist's annotations with indications of the colours to be used. At lower left hand corner, the date '1933' in pencil. At lower right hand corner, the artist's name and address within a rectangle, in pencil.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Carrick, Edward","id":"A33444"},"association":{"text":"designers","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"watercolour","id":"x33202"},{"text":"pencil","id":"x30347"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing (image-making)","id":"AAT54196"},{"text":"painting (image-making)","id":"AAT54216"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Watercolour and pencil on paper","categories":[{"text":"Education & Learning","id":"THES252542"},{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2020MR2627"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES345353"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"designs","id":"AAT102051"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1933","earliest":"1933-01-01","latest":"1933-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"56","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"design","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"76","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"design","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"65.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"mount","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"90.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"mount","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":" '\"<u>Items of News</u>\" SCHEME 2 VICTORIA NEWS THEATRE' ","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Title, written by the artist in red and black paint"},{"content":"'Waitin [sic] Room or/ Salon / to be [block of red paint, above a smaller block of blue paint]'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Artist's annotation in pencil with indication of paint colours, lower centre."},{"content":"'Ceilings to be painted / same green as predominant / colour above i.e. [block of turquoise paint]'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Artist's annotation in pencil with indication of paint colour, within pencil rectangle, lower centre."},{"content":"'x Camide [?] / x Joysmith / x Wordsworth 1/4 / x Mack 1/8'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Artist's annotation in pencil, lower centre."},{"content":"'E.
