No designer is credited but the Arts Theatre programme, 27 May 1930, indicates it was made by Grace Lovat Fraser. William Chappell, who was enchanted by this solo described how the costume was 'an interpretation, rather than a statement, of a period, consisting of a full skirted velvet tunic with ruffles, a tricorne hat with a plume, tights and soft knee high boots, she appeared like a beautiful stripling - a boy with a girl's tenderness - a girl with a boy's eagerness. The choreographic shape of the dance was slight, consisting of a few elevation steps, and some stretched arabesques with the supporting knee bent and the whole line long and drawn out to a reaching and imploring hand...once seen, an unforgettable experience'. Chappell also noted that Karsavina wore a long curled red wig. He also noted that 'through her controlled gestures and the elusive shades of expression that changed continually the set of her lovely tragic face, it [the solo] told the whole story of Mlle de Maupin.","physicalDescription":"Black velvet jacket with full skirt with white silk lining. The jacket fastens in front with hooks and eyes. It is decorated down the front with two vertical triple rows of small rhinestones and three pairs of similarly decorative buttons. Rhinestones pick out a pocket pattern on both sides of the skirt, each with three decorative buttons. There are two double bands of rhinestones at each cuff, below which are sewn in cuffs of cream lace. The back is undecorated.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Lovat Fraser, Grace (Mrs)","id":"N4250"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"velvet","id":"AAT133711"},{"text":"silk (textile)","id":"AAT243428"},{"text":"lace","id":"AAT132861"}],"techniques":[{"text":"sewing","id":"AAT53658"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Velvet, silk and lace","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment and leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Dance","id":"THES252984"},{"text":"Costumes","id":"THES269529"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2019MF5404","2019MF5402","2019MF5403","2019MF5405"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES366552"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"dance costumes","id":"x34504"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"Believed to be made by Grace Lovat Fraser in London"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1920s","earliest":"1920-01-01","latest":"1929-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Rachel Cameron bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"73","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"centre front measured along opening","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"58","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"length of sleeves","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"length of lace cuffs","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"37","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"across shoulders","note":""},{"dimension":"Circumference","value":"70","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"circumference at waist","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Passed from Tamara Karsavina to Rachel Cameron ","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Costume worn by Tamara Karsavina for her solo, Mme de Maupin.
