It was made from a blind-stamped impression which is a print made by a form of relief printing. The design is impressed into the paper blind, that is un-inked. In this case, the metalwork notebook case was the printing block. The blind-stamped impression of its raised border is handcoloured in watercolour. \r\n\r\nThe design bears an inscription that states it was made for the Queen of Naples on the 25th of February 1788. She was Marie-Caroline of Hapsburg-Lorraine, sister of Marie-Antoinette and wife of Ferdinand IV of Bourbon of the two Sicilies. It is from an album of designs which date from about 1735-1820 and includes those for snuffboxes, scent holders, watches and watch cases, spoons, fans and fan mounts, small swords, and chatelaines (ornamental chains, pins, or clasps usually worn at a woman's waist, to which trinkets, keys, purses, or other articles are attached).\r\n\r\nThere is a close relationship between the contents of the album and known work by three Parisian goldsmiths, Jean Ducrollay (1710-1787), Pierre- François Drais (active 1761-1788), and Charles Ouizille (1744-1830) whose names appear on the first page of the album. This suggests that all the designs emanate from their workshops. Drais worked for the Court at Versailles as jeweller to both King Louis XV and Louis XVI. Ouizille worked in this capacity for Louis XVI. Most of the material dates from the period 1755-90.","physicalDescription":"Relief impression taken from a rectangular notebook case.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"watercolour","id":"x33202"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"blind stamping","id":"AAT192907"},{"text":"painting","id":"x30598"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Blind-stamped impression, the raised border handcoloured on paper","categories":[{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"},{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"},{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2011ET3317","2006BE2002"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"SB5","shelf":"SH6","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"designs","id":"AAT102051"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1788","earliest":"1788-01-01","latest":"1788-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased with the assistance of Wartski Limited","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"10.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'grandeur juste de la tablett en bordure fait pour la reine de Naples le 25 Fevrie 1788 son turcoise ruban bleu feuil verte'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"measurements just of the tablet with border made for the Queen of Naples on 25 February 1788 its turquoise ribbon blue leaf green","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Marie-Caroline of Hapsburg-Lorraine, Queen of Naples (1751-1825)."}],"objectHistory":"The relief impression was taken from a rectangular notebook case made for Marie-Caroline of Hapsburg-Lorraine, sister of Marie-Antoinette and wife of Ferdinand IV of Bourbon.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Design form album of designs by Ouizille, French, eighteenth century.\r\nNOT TO BE ISSUED WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM THE HEAD OF DESIGNS","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Heike Zech,<u> 'Designs for Gold Boxes in the Album of the Workshop of Jean Ducrollay and his Successors'</u>, in <i>Going for Gold: craftsmanship and collecting of gold boxes</i>, ed.
